I'm back
After 8.5 days without power and 14 without cable internet, I’m finally fully powered again.
For those of you who don’t know, I live in Houston and Hurricane Ike kicked this city’s butt. Lori and I were very lucky as only one of our trees fell, and that one landed on the neighbor’s house. Fortunately, her sons got it off her roof and temporarily patched her roof the same day. The following morning, Houston got 8 inches of rain in a few hours, so those who did not have their roofs covered from damage suffered even more. I won’t bore you with all the stories I have from this storm. I will say we felt really lucky to get power when we did, as some neighbors still don’t have it back yet. Also, considering the extensive damage around town, there were very few deaths. We personally don’t know of anyone that even got hurt, though some homes around have/had trees fall through them. There still is a lot of work to be done to get Houston fully restored, but a lot of progress has been made. Galveston is a different story.
It’s good to be back, take care everyone.

Glad to hear you’re both okay.
Embarrassingly, I have to admit to not noticing you’d been away. =o0
Put it down to not paying attention.

27 Sep 2008, 2:36 pmI was trying to think the other day who I knew of that lived in that area. I remember now reading on your website that you are in Houston. You are lucky indeed, but still, more than a week without power and [gulp] no Internet connect … very trying. Were you eating steaks and hamburgers and everything in your freezer for the first few days, cooking on the barbecue, trying to save what you could? I’m just thinking back to some “straight line winds” we had in the Memphis, TN, area a few years back. That’s what we did. No power for a week. Once is enough for that kind of thing.

27 Sep 2008, 4:11 pmYeah, we ate a lot of the meat. I was not prepared for the outage to be that long. I’m too optimistic for my own good sometimes. ;)
HK, I’ve been rather quiet lately, so not noticing I was gone is understandable. :D

27 Sep 2008, 6:48 pmGood to hear you Joe
My sister-in-law is nearby in Sugar Land and like yourself they were quite lucky in that apart from losing a load of Ridge Tiles they were relatively unscathed and only without power for a few days.
