Does the area out side the crop (or mask) become transparent so that you can place image adjacent to each other so that the masked area does not hide part of the adjacent image?

Depending on the layer hirachy, yes.
Also the resolution can be changed in SnaNDrag, yes- but I don’t know how much. Like all these things it is best to experiment. It works for me and I’ve had Intaglio drawings using snapndrag blown up to A0.
