Carousel help
Hi,
I’m trying to set up a carousel action on one of my pages and am having difficulties. I can see the Carousel Button and Carousel Tab actions but am I missing the Carousel action itself? I looked at this thread and it seems that way: http://www.freewaytalk.net/thread/view/30348#m_30350
I’ve looked under page actions and didn’t see it. I’ve tried to follow Walter’s tutorial (which is very easy to understand!) on his homepage for the action and even reinstalled the Protaculous files from his site. Am I missing something here?
Thanks for any help!

14 Jul 2008, 5:11 pmYou must select a layer (in this case the group of individual panes) in order to apply Carousel. Carousel will only apply to a layer.
See Step 4 in the directions — that’s the key here.

14 Jul 2008, 8:32 pmThanks once again Walter! I went back and tried it again following your directions precisely and got it. This is a really neat effect. Thank you for taking the time to make something so cool.
Where do you find time to write and update actions as well as run your own company and post so much here helping others? Do you sleep? :)
Thanks again!

5 Sep 2008, 7:44 pmI don’t see the Carousel action. What I see is Observer. Is this the same?

5 Sep 2008, 7:49 pmCarousel can only be applied to an HTML layer. Perhaps you are trying to apply it to something else? No, they are not the same thing at all.

5 Sep 2008, 9:38 pmI must be dense today, because this should be simple.
I created an HTML box (Box1). Then I created another HTML box within Box1 (Box2 and Layer1). Then I duplicated Box2 twice (Box3 & Box4) I grouped Box1,2,3 (Layer2) I try applying an Item:Action to Layer2 and there is no Carousel action. I also tried applying it to Layer1, no dice.
I created a graphic box and can apply the Carousel Button and Tab actions to it (obviously doesn’t do anything without the main action).
I must be missing something obvious.

5 Sep 2008, 9:49 pmTry starting over.
Draw an HTML box on the page. Make it a color.
With that box selected, use Edit > Duplicate to make 3 more just like it. Use offsets of 0,0 to be sure that there is no position change between them.
Click on the header at the top of the Site pane until it shows the items in the page (rather than the entire site).
At this point, you should see a list of four items in the Site pane:
item1
item1a
item1b
item1c
Click on each item within that list in turn, and change its color using the Inspector so that each one is a different color.
Now drag a selection rectangle around one corner of the stack (or use Shift-click to select all of the elements within the Site pane), and use Item > Group from the main menu to group the elements together. (One possibility here is that you are using the Mac-standard Apple-G for Group, which is unfortunately not the case in Freeway). With the group selected, try applying the Carousel action to the group.
I suspect what might be happening here is that you have more than one thing selected when you are trying to apply the Action. Grouping the elements gives you one logical object to attach the Action to.

6 Sep 2008, 2:55 amWell I followed your steps exactly and I am still not seeing the Carousel action. When I look in my Library/Application Support/Freeway folder I see the Protaculous action. In fact I deleted it and re-installed it.
I did create it correctly originally (I understand how to group properly), but started from scratch just to double check I didn’t have something wrong.
Seems bizarre.

7 Sep 2008, 4:04 amOk, I gave it another go after closing Freeway and re-starting the machine. Now I can apply the Carousel action!
Now I am having problems with the Button and Tab actions.
The buttons do nothing and the tabs simply bring up the new layer very similar to Target/Show.
The only thing that actually carousels the panes are when I put a value in the auto-glide box.
I didn’t see any discussions regarding Button or Tab, so I am a bit stumped.

7 Sep 2008, 12:53 pmTry dragging a selection around the Carousel and all of it’s controls, and grouping that. Everything should work then.

7 Sep 2008, 1:41 pmThanks. I was wondering how the items referenced each other. It should have been obvious.

8 Sep 2008, 7:45 pmDoes having a CSS Menu affect Carousel?
I cannot get the action to pull up on my page even though I can get it to work fine on a blank page. The only difference I can see is my page has a CSS menu.
Thanks.

8 Sep 2008, 7:49 pmThe other thing I noticed is I have some Rollovers, but they are not tabs for the Carousel.

I can’t get the Carousel or Button action to show.

8 Sep 2008, 10:36 pmThis page does not have the Carousel or the Carousel button applied anywhere that I can see. I can see where you want to have it, but it doesn’t appear to have worked. The glider.js library is not applied to the head of the page, and the various functions that Carousel would write are not in there either.

9 Sep 2008, 1:36 amYes, I know. I am not getting the actions to show in the Items:Actions list for this page. I don’t know if there is some conflict going on that won’t allow Carousel.

9 Sep 2008, 1:45 amIs the item you are trying to apply it to a layer? It must be, or this won’t work. What HTML level is the page set to?
Walter

george
9 Sep 2008, 2:48 amYes, I believe it is a layer. I created an HTML box and then added some HTML and Graphic child boxes within it, duplicated it, and grouped them together. The grouped item appears to be on the ‘highest’ layer level, judging by the box next to its name (it is as far left as any other layer other than the Page icon).
I don’t know how to see what HTML level the page is set to. If you mean the page icon in the list, it is the furthest to the left/highest level.

9 Sep 2008, 3:04 amTry setting the page (in the Output tab of the Inspector) to XHTML rather than HTML 4. See if that makes any difference. It appears as though the elements you are trying to affect are layers, but it’s hard to say what might be affecting you here.
If you can’t even see the Action in Freeway, you might want to restart your computer.
Carousel will only apply to a single layer, so to get it to attach to all of the layers in your carousel stack, you must group that stack together, and not include anything else in that initial group.
Carousel button will only apply to an image. If you have any other wrapper around the image, or anything else selected at the same time, it also won’t work.

9 Sep 2008, 3:05 amThere must be something in the Master page causing a conflict. I can create the exact elements in a blank page and get Carousel to work, but in my Master page it doesn’t even allow the actions.
Anything to do with the HTML type? I hadn’t even looked at that when setting up my Master page. I see it is set as HTML 4.0.1 Transitional. Then again, the blank pages I get it work in are the same type.
My Master page has Rollovers (ah, dang it). Does this mean I’m out of luck? Every page has tabs in the main navigation menu with rollovers. I think I read something about a conflict, but I thought it was if you used tabs in conjunction with Carousel.
I was planning on a heavy usage of Carousel, but I really need rollovers with my main tabs. If my reasoning about a conflict is true, any suggestions?

9 Sep 2008, 3:15 amSo you are trying to make the Carousel on the Master Page itself? Are you able to make a working Carousel on a child page that is based on this master?
I’ve never experimented with making one directly on a master page before, but there are some weird behaviors with Freeway and Actions in Master Pages. But mostly those have to do with page actions, not with item actions.
Try leaving the Carousel off of the Master Page, draw one on a child page, and when you have it working to your liking, then you can copy and paste it to as many other pages as you need.

9 Sep 2008, 3:36 amNo I am not trying to apply it to the Master page. What I mean is each page I create uses the Master which has rollovers.
Switching to XHTML did not help.
I am going to re-boot and see if it helps.
Thanks.
BTW, how do you move a selection of items with the mouse instead of the keyboard?

george
9 Sep 2008, 3:53 amI re-booted the machine.
Ok, I created a second blank Master Page and dragged it into the site folder. Carousel still doesn’t show up.
Just to prove I am doing it right, I again created a new site and was able to build a Carousel no problem.
This is killing me. I know it must be some little item I am not figuring out. What the heck is going on?
Thanks.

9 Sep 2008, 12:06 pmCan you please make a failing document with as few pages/elements as possible, and send it to me with http://senduit.com ? I can’t reproduce this here. Also, please include a Finder copy of the version of Protaculous.fwactionb that you have in your ~/Library/Application Support/Freeway 5/Actions/General folder.

9 Sep 2008, 12:08 pmAlso, to move a group using the mouse, you hover your cursor over any edge until the pointer becomes hollow. If you click at that point, you can drag the entire thing around. It’s a bit fiddly, but it works.

10 Sep 2008, 2:30 pmFunny thing. I copied the contents of one of the pages to send and it allowed Carousel in the new file page!
Here is the link to the file in senduit: http://senduit.com/fa3ea2
This is from the original file and still does not allow Carousel. I still hope you can figure it out so I don’t have to copy and paste all my pages over, one by one. Plus I’d like to know what happened.
Do you need the media files or anything else?
Thanks.

10 Sep 2008, 3:28 pmI can see the Action and apply it on the page objects in your file. I have a newer (unreleased) version of Carousel here, but the basic premise is the same. So I think the issue is on your computer in interaction with this file.
Make sure that you are using the main menu to apply the Action — there is an issue with this Action and using the [ + ] thing on the Actions palette when applying the action to individual items on the page.

10 Sep 2008, 4:28 pmI don’t see how it can be the computer since I can get the actions to work in new files.
There must be something corrupted in the original file. Oh well, at least it works. Just a pain to copy everything over into a new file.
Yes, I have been using the main menu to apply the actions.
Thank you very much for all of your time dealing with this.
BTW, are rollovers allowed with the Tab action?

10 Sep 2008, 4:54 pmThe Carousel Tab Action doesn’t “see” the URL added by the Rollover Action, and so wraps that link with another link. I would need to substantially rewrite Tab to make it look for an enclosing link, and modify that rather than blindly wrapping the image with a link. I’m not sure if the link added by the Rollover would “appear” to the Tab Action in the same way that a manually-created link would do.
If you know the ID of each pane, you could work around this by making the tabs manually:
- Make your rollover tabs as you would normally.
- Group them, then select the group, choose Item / Extended from the main menu, and add a new property to the DIV named ‘class’ with the value ‘controls’
- On each rollover tab, set the URL to be #theIdOfThePane (hash followed by whatever is in the Title field in the Inspector when the target pane is selected)
That should do the trick until I can spend some more “quality time” with Carousel.
