Seems like a complicated way to achieve a simple task.

It’s not as complicated to crop this way as you might think. Just draw a rectangle (or circle or whatever) defining your crop area, group the two objects and click the standard mask radio button in the group inspector. This is only one more step than cropping in Photoshop (which has a dedicated crop tool).

There are a few advantages to this approach.

It works on any kind of graphic, not just bitmap images (e.g., you can mask a text block this way).
It allows you to use non-rectangular masks (e.g., you can mask to an oval or text).
It’s nondestructive. Since the cropped object hasn’t been directly modified you can come back later and crop it “bigger” if you need to.

You may like to look at the wonderfully named “Chocoflop” application - kind of Photoshop on the cheap!

Also, an application I use all the time; SnapNDrag, which I can highly recommend. - SnapNDrag is almost (if not better?) than a dedicated crop function IMO.
